Madagascar Monday

Hey, what's this.....Mom says it's  little Lemur stuffie...

Ellie says it's kind of tasty....

Mom and Dad's friend Deacon Mike recently went to Madagascar as part of Catholic Relief Services. Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. They are are the official overseas relief and development agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and a member of Caritas International and the National Catholic Development Conference.

While there, Deacon Mike got to get up close and personal with Lemurs!!!

What is a lemur?

A lemur is a primate found naturally only on the island of Madagascar, an island located about 250 miles (400 kilometers) off the coast of southern Africa in the Indian Ocean (lemurs have been introduced on neighboring islands). Lemurs are prosimians, which are primates that were the evolutionary predecessor of monkeys and apes (simians). There are nearly sixty types of lemurs ranging in size from the tiny 30 gram Pygmy Mouse-lemur to the 10 kilogram Indri. All lemurs are endangered species, due mainly to habitat destruction (deforestation) and hunting.

We hope you enjoyed our slideshow.  Even though this was a fun, amusing video, the people there really need lots of help.  The women have never had an opportunity to be educated and to be able to earn an income.  With the help of organizations like CRS and others, we hope they find a way to a better future.

Here's a funny thing......Mom and Dad were at a gardening center on Friday and they saw these two lemurs there!!!  The owner said they are a retired breeding pair that they acquired.  They have lots of interesting animals at the garden center.

If you're missing Raz's normal ManCat Monday post, stop by the Tabby Cat Club.  There's a fun event going on (Cats in Hats) and you can see Raz there.
