The Adventures of Periwinkle and Stinky

Periwinkle was so happy that she and Stinky were back to their regular schedule of Adventures after his Walkabout.  She missed him so much when he was gone and was so happy when he came home.  His Mom gave her permission to do something a little more active today and she hoped he liked what she had planned.

All of a sudden, the Teleportation Tunnel shook and with a WOOSH, he was there.  The two ran to each other and shared whisker kisses and paw pats.  They loved being together and wanted to make the most of every second.  Both tabbies said how much fun they had the previous day telling jokes with their pal Marv.  If you missed it, click HERE.

"What are we doing today?" asked Stinky. " I hope my Mom is letting us go somewhere fun!"  Periwinkle said she had something special planned and that her Mom was going to drive them somewhere for their Adventure.  "Why did I have to come so much later than normal?  I am usually here during the day" said Stinky.  Periwinkle said that it had to be dark for their adventure.  Confused, but happy to be with Periwinkle, Stinky followed her to her Mom's car and off they went.

After a short ride, Periwinkle's Mom dropped them off at the river in Cocoa Beach.  There were lots of other couples there and they were all so excited to meet the famous Periwinkle and Stinky!

Periwinkle explained that they were going on a kayak tour of Biolumensence.  Stinky was a little leery of getting into the kayak but Periwinkle assured him it would be safe and, in no time, they both mastered steering it.

"What exactly IS bioluminescence?" asked Stinky.  Periwinkle explained.  "Bioluminescence is the chemical reaction that occurs within tiny living organisms, and it manifests in the form of light. When these tiny organisms – dinoflagellates or plankton – rearrange their molecules, they produce a chemical “luciferin”. This chemical produces the light. In the lagoons of Florida, two organisms are responsible for bioluminescent sightings throughout the year. First is the marine plankton or dinoflagellates which are sometimes referred to as “sea sparkle”.

The second one is comb jellyfish which have been around for over 500 million years! Whenever they are disturbed by any sort of movement, they emit a blue-green glow which can be seen in the dark."

Both tabbies gasped when they got their first view of bioluminescence.

They spent some time kayaking around and oohing and ahhing and decided to rest for a while on the beach and watch the sparkling water from the other kayakers.

Periwinkle brought snacks and they both agreed that Temptations sounded pretty good so she pulled out her bag and they snacked while they watched.

Suddenly, Stinky jumped up and got in the kayak by himself.  "Stinky, what are you doing?" she asked.  He giggled and headed out a bit.  After a few minutes, she saw what he did and smiled.

When he came back, they hugged and whisker kissed.  "I wanted to show you how much I love you" he said.  She blushed and smiled and told him she loved him too.

Soon it was time for Periwinkle's Mom to pick them up and bring them back to Periwinkle's house.  They were both tired so they spent some time whisker kissing, paw patting, and then fell asleep.  When they woke up, Stinky got back into the Teleportation Tunnel to head home.  They blew kisses to each other and off he went.  Periwinkle headed to her Mom's bed to go to sleep for the night and to dream of her handsome Stinky

Here's a short video on bioluminescence.

WOW! What an extra special and fun visit these two had this time around. They always have fun but this time they learned something VERY COOL and got to see it too. My Mom said when she lived in Clearwater a million years ago you could go to one of the main roads which led to a bridge and see just along the shoreline at night this beautiful sight. It was nowhere NEAR as gorgeous as this but it was light caused by the same thing. Thanks for sharing this fun adventure and information too!

Hugs, Teddy
