Poetic Thankful Thursday

Today is Poetic Thursday hosted by our pals Teddy and Angel Sammy at Two Spoiled Cats

Today's photo prompt is SUPER CUTE!

Meerkats!

Is there anything cuter than a meerkat?
Not even a cat in a hat!
Mom has seen them at our Zoo.
They sure are a happy crew.
Some of them  watch for dangers
Others look at the faces of strangers.
Watching them is such a hoot.
They are just so darn kyoot!!

Mom loves visiting our Brevard Zoo and one of the highlights is Meerkat Manor.  Here are some photos she took during one of her visits.

Sunday Selfies

We're pawticipating in The Cat on My Head's Sunday Selfies today.

Remember when Mom went to the Brevard Zoo a few weeks ago?  We forgot to share some of the selfies that the animals there took.   We don't know this guy's name but he really enjoyed taking a selfie.

Sunday Selfies

We're pawticipating in The Cat on My Head's Sunday Selfies today.

Earlier in the week, Mom went to a special lunch event at the Brevard Zoo.  Our zoo is really pawsome and lots of the residents wanted to take selfies.  We'll be sharing them with you in the next few weeks.

Today's selfie was taken by Cheyenne!  She's a bear that was recently rescued and came to live at the zoo. Here's her story....

you might want to biggify to read her story better.

At first, Cheynne kept getting distracted with these boxes.  The zoo staff puts treats in them and Cheyenne loves to rip the boxes apart and get to the treats.  Hey.........we do that too!!

Finally, she figured it out!!  We think she did a great job with her first selfie.

Sunday Selfies

We're pawticipating in The Cat on My Head's Sunday Selfies today.

Last week Mom went to the Guardian ad Litem volunteer appreciation luncheon at the Brevard Zoo.  This guy was busy eating his lunch but agreed to do a quick selfie.  We think he did a pretty good job since he had a hard time handling the phone!

After he snapped his selfie, he went back to eating lunch...

Sunday Selfies

We're pawticipating in The Cat on My Head's Sunday Selfies today.

A few weeks ago, Mom and Dad had a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon for the Guardian ad Litem program.  The luncheon was held at the Brevard Zoo.  After lunch, Mom went to see the Meerkats and this guy asked her to let him do a selfie.

He got so good at selfies that he did a little dance!!

Meerkat Monday

Mom and her friends visited the Brevard Zoo last week.  She took tons of pics (of course) and we'll be sharing them with you but today we wanted to highlight the Meerkats at Meerkat Hamlet

The Meerkats were adorable.  They were digging like crazy and the zoo person said that, because of the heavy rain we had over the weekend, all of their tunnels had collapsed and now they were having a blast re-digging them!  We hope you enjoy our video of pics Mom took.

Mom fed giraffes and saw lots of pawsome animals....but that's for another blog post!!

Two Jaguar Cubs Born at the Zoo

These little cuties were born at the Brevard Zoo which is only a few miles from where we live! Aren't they cute???

On September 29, two jaguar cubs were born to Masaya. One might
remember that Nindiri, Masaya's first cub, was born in June 2007 and just
recently went to the San Diego Zoo to be paired with a mate as part of the
Association of Zoo's and Aquariums Species Survival Plan.

"Once again, Masaya is proving to be an excellent mother, caring for and
nursing each cub equally,” said Michael Magaw, Curator of Animals at Brevard
Zoo. “Her confidence and comfort with her keepers and mate Xinca is very high;
therefore, allowing him to remain within close proximity of their cubs."

With the training Masaya's keepers have invested over the years, we are
able to closely monitor their health and development as well as track their
weight gain in relation to her last cub Nindiri. Surprisingly, both of this
year’s cubs are larger than Nindiri was at two weeks of age. At present, both
cubs are right at five pounds in weight and are gaining just over a pound a
week.

They are quite active and vocal even at this early age. We are all
excited and looking forward to watching these two playing and growing together.
The cubs are expected to go out on exhibit for the first time in mid- to late
November. At this time, the sex of each cub is unknown.

The AZA's Species Survival Plan is to reach a target population of 100 to 120 jaguars in accredited zoos. As of 2007 there were 44 jaguars at 19 institutions.

Jaguars are found in the dense forests and swampy grasslands of Central and South
America. Known for swimming and climbing, jaguars are carnivores and hunt deer,
monkey, tapirs, capybara, turtles and fish. Sexual maturity for these animals
occurs right around three years and litters of one to four young are common.
Jaguars live up to 20 years in captivity.
